Going Private ASAP

Alas the day has come. I am going to go Private! I know, it is sad that it has come to this, but I feel like it would be better for my family if I did it. I especially feel inspired to do this since one of Wes' clients is a bit of a nut. I have even started the process of removing our phone number and address from any listings. That's right folks. We aren't going to exist anywhere. My Facebook account has been private for a long time, but I put off making the blog private. I liked that anyone could look at the blog and comment. I know generally people are caring, kind and not psychotic. I guess there are always a few bad apples in the bunch.

Anyway, comment if you would like an invite to the blog. Be sure to leave your e-mail address. I will be going private ASAP!

The Power of Prayer

I am a firm believer in Prayers and the power that they hold. I know that when others pray for you that miracles can and do happen. I would love your prayers for my family right now. Wes has an interview tomorrow morning and I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful it would be for us if he got this job. I feel very humbled to post this and debated putting this out there, but I have felt like we can use all of the support that we can get. We are doing fine financially since Wes has his own practice up and running, but without going into too much detail, it would be better if he had a steady job in a firm. Thanks everyone!!

A Reunion with dear friends

Last night my sister Sarah and I got together with some dear, old friends. Michelle and Lisa. These wonderful girls lived down the street from us growing up and we became best friends pretty quickly. There were endless summers of sleepovers, back yard adventures, and movie making bliss. Michelle and Lisa moved away when I was 12 and Sarah and I were so sad to see them go. We really were almost inseparable at times! Thanks to Facebook we found each other again! Michelle and her husband Ben actually were in China with Jeff and Erica as well. What a small world we live in. It was so wonderful to have everyone over at my house to enjoy pancakes and to laugh about old times. Michelle even brought some old home videos. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Lydia sure got a kick of seeing me about her age putting on fashion shows and yes, even picking my nose on camera.

Lisa brought her oldest daughter Allison. Adelle has absolutely fallen in love with her. She keeps asking when they can have a play date and has informed us that she is her new best friend!

Hopefully we will be able to have a lot more get togethers. I don't want years to pass by again without seeing these wonderful, dear friends! I am so glad I found them.

Sunflower Seeds

So one of Adelle's Sunflower heads has been drying on our kitchen window sill since Thanksgiving. Last weekend I decided it was time to finally make use of her summer "crop". I got the seeds out of the flower and put them on a baking sheet. I baked them for about 45 minutes at 250 degrees. They turned out pretty good! I think I will have the family try them finally. It has been such a busy week that I have practically forgotten about them. I even shook them with some dry ranch seasoning and chili powder. It is fun to have a little bit of summer during these bleak winter days. I even saved some of the seeds before toasting them so Adelle can plant a new crop this summer.

Family Exercise Night

As a family we love to exercise, especially during the summer months when we can go hiking or on long walks around the area. In the winter time we of course can't do those things so we enjoy plugging in the Playstation and dancing to Dance Dance Revolution. I couldn't resist talking these photos of the family.

Lydia is getting really good at Dance Dance Revolution and sometimes even beats me.

Wes is the absolute best at it! He is always on a higher difficulty level then the rest of us.

Adelle doesn't like dancing on a dance mat. Instead she makes up her own crazy dances and poses. She always has to wear some sort of special dress. I love this picture of her mid air! She probably gets more of a work out than the rest of us.

Exercise is such a fun way for us to laugh and to work out the stress that we have felt during the day. It is a fun way to spend time together.

Our stay at Seasons at the Ritter Mansion

On Valentine's Day Wes and I headed up to Logan to stay at the Ritter Mansion. We dropped of Adelle at Grandma's house and started our romantic adventure. It took us a couple of hours to arrive, and I was a little worried about the weather in the canyon, but we made it safely. In fact we were a little bit early for our 4:00 check in. Wes hadn't had dinner yet so we decided to go to dinner. The manager at the bed and breakfast recommended that we dine at the Iron Gate Grill in Providence. We like trying new places so we decided to go for it!

It was good that we went to dinner early because I don't think we would have been able to get in anywhere without a reservation later in the evening. Wes ordered steak and crab. He remarked that he just can't turn down a chance to have crab. I ordered a seafood pasta. The Iron Gate Grill has a great little salad bar to start with and these yummy little bread rolls that come before dinner. I especially liked the potato au gratin and bacon soup. Yummy. Wes' entree was delicious! I know because I ended up eating half of his large steak. It was so juicy and flavorful. My pasta tasted good at first, but it was just so heavy with it's cream sauce and the crab filled pasta was just to thick. That is the best way I can describe it. It ended up upsetting my stomach so Wes was sweet and shared his dinner and I enjoyed going to the salad bar again. Wes wins again with the entree choice. That is twice in a row for him.

After dinner we checked into the bed and breakfast. It is an old fashioned mansion that has been around for a long time. It is reasonably priced compared to other bed and breakfasts.

Wes reserved "The Parlor" room for us. It is the actual parlor of the old mansion that has been converted into a room.

I loved the bright colors of the room.
We had our own little nook for a private breakfast in the morning. One side of the room was completely windows.
We were very disappointed to learn that our fireplace was not a "functioning" fireplace. Wes mentioned that they should advertise that the room has a fireplace if it doesn't work.

The bathroom was large, but the jetted tub, was well let's just say it was moderately sized. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything you want.

The mansion even has it's own little ballroom. When we got to the mansion the staff was busy cleaning up the room from a wedding that had taken place earlier in the day. It would be an absolutely beautiful place to have a reception. I was tempted to sneak down to the ballroom and dance with Wes.

After we had settled in we decided to explore the town. We found an antique, second hand bookstore and had a fun time looking through stacks and stacks of old books. I was very tempted to buy a very early copy (early 1900's) of the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It was pocket size and reading the front pages found out was used in public schools as a reader. I figured it was probably abridged so I passed on it. I don't like abridged copies of books. Wes was tempted to buy an older book of ghost stories for kids. He ended up passing on it as well. It was so much fun though just to be out by ourselves enjoying each other's company.
We headed back to our room to enjoy the rest of the evening. One bad thing about our room is that it was often cold. The room is still heated by these old radiators. They also liked to pop and hiss at night making it hard to sleep. You never sleep as well in a strange bed though. We watched "The Last of the Mohican's" because I hadn't seen it in years and Wes had never seen it. He remarked that it probably wasn't the best Valentine's Day choice. It is a pretty slow moving plot at times, can be graphic, and some of the acting is a little stiff. I will need to remember to bring something more romantic next time. We even popped over to a nearby McDonald's to get a late night "snack" because we had dinner so early.

The next morning we were served breakfast in our own room. The breakfast was remarkably good. We had french toast stuffed with vast amounts of cream cheese. It was covered in raspberry sauce. We also had sausage, and grapes.

I ate every bit of my breakfast. I even outdid Wes. I guess you just need to splurge once in a while.

We hung out in our room for a little while and then we got ready to go. I took some pictures and then we headed out the door.

We drove around for a little while so we wouldn't get back before Adelle and Grandma were out of church. Can you believe how much snow there is in Logan? We were glad to be back home again, but we loved our little get away. There really isn't anything like getting away from the busy world with your loved one. It gives us a chance to be all by ourselves again, free of any worries or responsibilities! I am so glad we have this tradition.

Seeing Red!! Oh what did I do?

So...I was at Wal-Mart picking up a few essentials. I was walking down the hair care aisle talking to my sister on the cell phone. I passed the hair dye and start thinking "That might be fun". I used to dye my hair all the time when it was super short. I haven't dared to dye it these past few years because I don't know if I can dye my long hair all by myself. My sister and I start chatting and she lets me know that she does it all the time. Her hair is pretty long, so I think "why not". A nice shade of red was also on sale for $5 a box. My sister advises me that I will need two boxes. $10 isn't bad so I decide to go for it. I think that perhaps it will be a nice Valentine's surprise. I remembered that Wes really liked my hair when I dyed it red.

Anywho, I check out, head home and announce to my husband that I will be locking myself in the bathroom for the next 30 minutes. He looks super alarmed and demands to know what I am doing. I casually remark that I am dying my hair red. He looks..well..dismayed. "I like you just the way you are". I bring up that years ago he loved it when I dyed my hair red. He says well that was seven years ago. He then proceeds to say that it is my hair and I can do whatever I want with it. He also remarks that I shouldn't try to change my appearance to please him.

Well I still decide to dye my hair thinking "he'll love it and I'll love it". I go through the painstaking process of putting goopy die all through my hair. I am wiping up little spills as necessary in my stark white bathroom. I head into the shower to rinse it out and to condition. I come out put my hair in a towel and proceed to head to the bedroom for the blow dry. I sit there blow drying my hair wondering what color it is going to turn when it is completely dry. I look in the mirror for the "moment of truth". It is very Red. Darker than I expected, but I think to myself "it is pretty". Red has always brought out a nice color in my complexion. I go to put my pink shirt back on. "Nope! That won't work". Pink is now out of the wardrobe, if I ever had any sort of wardrobe to begin with. The color completely clashes with my hair now.

Now I know that hair dye fades quite a bit. I used a semi-permanent dye as well so I know it will probably fade even quicker, but right now here it is surrounding my face just as stark as can be.

So I timidly go downstairs and open the door for Wes' reaction. He gets a look on his face that I can't quite explain. He says he likes it, but his expression isn't matching those words. Honestly, I think he misses my hair. Drat! Why can't I leave well enough alone! Maybe we'll get used to it? Oh and the girls keep looking at me and Lydia said "I wonder what you would look like in the sun". I just said "bright".

Anyway, here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Love is in the Air...

So is it still called PDA (public displays of affection) when it is on a blog? Maybe it is BDA (blogging displays of affection). Valentine's Day if fast approaching and I can't wait. Valentine's honestly is a little bit of a silly holiday. I mean, what are we really celebrating? Too many men and yes even women fall into the trap of buying silly trinkets to give to their loved one. We really should express our love and affection every day of the year. That said though, it is a wonderful excuse to reserve a room at a Bed and Breakfast and get away for the night. We used to go to a Bed and Breakfast every 6 months. It is a fun tradition that started 6 months after we were married. You see with our wedding anniversary being August 16 Valentine's Day is almost 6 months after that. It works out well.

We enjoy finding new places to stay and rarely stay the same place twice. Life is just to short! One of our favorite areas is Midway. There are several B&Bs there. It is a gorgeous little valley not far from Park City. Our favorite B&B in Midway has raised their prices to astronomical levels and so we will probably never stay there again. I highly recommend the B&B experience! There is a great site, http://www.bbiu.org/, that lists a lot of the bed and breakfasts in Utah. Check it out! They are so quaint and personal and it is so entirely different from just staying in a hotel.
I think we are starting to exhaust places we haven't been at this point. We haven't been down to Southern Utah though. Perhaps we will have to head down there sometime. Honestly, the next place I would love to get away with Wes would be back to Seattle, Washington. I would love to visit some of our old romantic spots! From Snoqualmie Falls, to the Pike's Place Market, to the piers.

We haven't been to a Bed and Breakfast for a year now and I am really looking forward to the time away with my love. We will be heading down to Logan tomorrow afternoon. I was watching the news last night and they said there will be a snow storm. Hopefully the roads will still be safe. Perhaps we will get snowed in :) Our room does have a fireplace so that would be wonderfully cozy! As long as we make it there first!

Adelle has been counting down the days for her sleepover with her Aunt Erica. She is super excited. It will be good for her to get to spend some time with her, especially because she will be leaving on an LDS mission sometime soon. The four months away from her when she was in China was difficult, so hopefully we will make it through this absence! Lydia had her own sleepover with Erica last weekend because she will be flying out to see her Dad, Erin and Kaitlyn tonight and will be staying until Monday. We will miss her, but I am sure she will have a lot of fun.

I hope all of you have a wonderful Valentine's Day! If you have a loved one, pull them close and enjoy their company. If you don't have a special one in your life, well take some time to spoil yourself. You deserve it!

How it all began

I must warn you ahead of time that this is a super long post!

Have you ever looked back at something you love to do and thought "How did it all start" or "When did it all begin", "When did that spark happen"? It is hard for me to exactly pinpoint when I began to love the stage. I remember doing my first play in my pajamas in grade school. I played Martha Washington and was cast for her death scene. I don't remember what my lines were. In fact I may not have had any lines now that I thing about it. I do remember the pajamas I was wearing. It was my beloved red, Strawberry Shortcake night dress. I remember also being slightly embarrassed to have my fellow classmates see me in them.

I remember auditioning for my first choir in grade school. I was excited when I made it. My sister had been in the choir when she had gone to the school and I was following in her footsteps. The Magna Music Makers. We had rehearsals and we sang at the mall, senior citizen centers, and for my fellow classmates during assemblies. Yes, I think singing in a choir was one of my very first "sparks". There was nothing like blending your voice with all of the other kids around you and trying with everything that your little being has to make it sound extraordinary. I always wanted to impress my teachers. Just call me a goody goody, but I liked to please. It wasn't only that though it was incredible to look out into the audience and sing with the biggest smile I could muster. It made me feel happy, excited and nervous all at the same time.

I continued on with choir in Junior High, but that was, well, somewhat of a joke. Half of the students didn't want to be in the class and would cause the teacher endless problems. We went through 3 choir teachers in 3 years. I saw some of the worst cruelty ever directed at these teachers from fellow students. I could never understand that type of behavior, NEVER! Why would male students plaster the choir room walls with maxi pads to try and send some sort of message to the choir teacher that they hated and disrespected him? Yes, this really happened. I loved singing and wanted to be there. I wanted to whip out the new music and go through note by note until those notes became ingrained in my mind, until I could sing it flawlessly and enjoy the wonderful harmonies!

I participated in a few plays in Junior High. One of them was "The Boyfriend". I got to wear a 30's flapper dress and and be in the chorus. The dress was actually a slip from a vintage dress my mother and I had found at an eclectic antique store downtown. My mom sewed fringe onto it to make it look just like something that would have been worn in the 30's. It was a little more revealing than I was entirely comfortable with, but I don't know if I ever told that to anyone. I had the biggest crush on the male lead. I remember watching the rehearsals and longing to be the lead girl. I watched her moves and heard how she spoke her lines and thought "I could do that". I yearned to be in her spot, not only to play opposite the handsome lead, but to be able to stand on that stage and be someone entirely different. To move the audience to believe and feel my words.

One of my best friends, Lori, had started attending acting classes up at the U of U. It was the Shakespeare Acting Company taught by Frank and Jill Gerrish. I begged my parents to let me attend as well. It probably wasn't cheap for my family to fork out money for the lessons so they didn't last more than a year or so, but what a year it was. Now looking back it makes you wonder how I could learn acting by picking up some of the most difficult material, Shakespeare! I would go and watch the older students and would just be in awe! They were incredible. Even though it was Shakespeare I could understand what was going on in the scene. I could feel what was going on in the scene.

Now Frank and Jill weren't easy teachers. They wouldn't let you come to class unprepared or let you coast through a scene. If you hadn't memorized your lines you were left on the sidelines to watch that day. If you weren't believable you were called on it, right in front of everyone else. It isn't that they weren't caring, but you had to be held accountable.

I remember a moment in that class that changed everything. I was playing Anne in Richard III opposite one of the more experienced young men in the class. Now, Richard the III is a very intense play. One of the very first scenes (the scene I was in) opens with a funeral procession for Anne's Father in law, the King. The corpse is laid upon the ground and Anne proceeds to cry over the body and curse Richard who has murdered not only her Father in Law, but also her husband. While Anne is lamenting Richard comes in and disrupts everything to try and woo Anne. Unbelievable but true.

Now here I am, this self conscious, young women trying to make the scene work. I am trying to mourn over my father in law and I'm just not cutting it and I know it. Frank stops everything and in front of everyone tries to get me to find something to relate to this scene. The class is patient and caring because they want me to succeed as well. He asks me what would devastate me. He tries to get me to pull from my very soul and it works. I find something and I find myself crying and shaking over the body and yelling and cursing Richard. I feel the anger and sorrow. They wash over me, draining, but invigorating me at the same time. After the scene was over the whole class bursts out into applause and Frank puts his arm around my shoulder visibly pleased with my progress, my breakthrough. I had broken through that wall that holds us back as human beings. I felt so free and open! I was an actress!

Like I said, my family couldn't afford the class anymore and so I went on with High School. I sang in the Jazz Choir and was a Lady in Waiting in "12 Dancing Princesses" my sophomore year. I didn't take drama because I didn't think it would fit into my schedule and I regretted it. Some time in the year Mrs. Abbey approached me and says she would like me to audition for the higher acting class for the upcoming year. She knew Frank and he had said good things about me. I am so excited. I audition and I make it! The bug had bit me. Acting was in my blood. It never got old or boring. There was always a new challenge, a new part to play.

Here we all are in Drama my Senior Year. I am towards the front with really short hair. Yes, that's me right behind the guy getting kissed by another boy. We were goofs and we were having the time of our lives!

I had the opportunity to compete in regional and state acting competitions and it was an incredible rush. There is such a nervousness and excitement! I remember watching my classmates and I could see when they got it, when they had hit the nail on the head, when you could believe every thing that they were saying, that they were that person in front of you that you had never met before in your life. You were excited for their triumphs and successes and for your own.

My senior year I got to play Golde in "Fiddler on the Roof". I worked with such incredible mentors. Mrs. Abbey taught me several good lessons. Whenever I would do a scene I wouldn't look into some one's eyes. I would look right next to their eyes or somewhere else. Isn't that strange? I didn't even realize I was doing it. She also taught me to try to have a love for my "kids". I had never been a mom and couldn't entirely understand what that would be like. I tried not to be too gruff or mean. Golde was a stern lady and finding a balance was difficult. Mr. Moore had this way of putting everything together, the music, the scenes, the feel. It was amazing to be on that stage and to feel the energy that I literally felt coming from the audience. There was such a rush at the curtain call when everything was done, when you knew you had done your best and put your soul out there for everyone to see.

You see, acting isn't someone else on that stage. It really is a piece of that person, a part of their soul that they are letting you see. Something that may be put right back away when the curtain falls and when they are back amongst civilized society.

I went on to do some plays after high school. In fact I met my first husband while doing shows at "Off Broadway Theater". I even did a show while I was 6 months pregnant with my oldest daughter. After she was born I put that part away for a while. There wasn't time for it. I ended up getting divorced and then I was a single mom. There definitely wasn't time for it then.

I had stopped thinking about shows anymore, stopped yearning for it. One day an old friend called me up on the phone and asked if I would like to audition to play Fruma Sarah in "Fiddler on the Roof". The thought of being back on the stage sparked something in me. It re-light a slow, smoldering fire within my bosom. I jumped at the chance and absolutely loved it. I involved Wes and Lydia in the show so I wouldn't feel so bad to be away from them and so we could be together.

Yes that is me being all dramatic, throwing my arms up in the air, while trying to balance on top of my husband's shoulders. It was wonderfully fun.

That play started something. I was then involved in Midsummer Night's Dream later than fall, playing Helena and back to my familiar Shakespeare! Poor clumsy, awkward Helen trying to plead for love in her sulky way. Ahh, how I can relate to her.

The next summer it was "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". I was so honored to play Milly, but so incredibly nervous to play her. Well, more accurately to sing her songs. She is a high soprano and, well, I am better as an alto. The acting was comfortable for me, but the singing was slightly nerve wracking, but I made it and learned that I can do it! I was so glad that the director took a chance on me and let me put myself out there. We had wonderful audiences that filled up that little theatre which was a great feeling!

It has been a while since I have done another show again, but I know I will be out there again sometime. Being on the stage has become an addiction for me. As I get farther and farther away from my last show the urge quiets down and goes behind the day to day obligations, but it is still there. Sometimes it will break through in a dream or when I see auditions posted. Silly isn't it. Wes said once that he has never seen me happier than when I am performing. I don't know if that is entirely true. I love my family more than anything else. There is something uniquely exhilarating and satisfying that only the stage brings though. It is just different from anything else in this world.

Growing Up

I have been playing with my scanner recently and thought it would be fun to post some pictures! This is a picture of my very first Christmas. I'm just hanging out on my mom's lap and my sister Sarah is so cute sitting next to us.
I just look fascinated with this Fisher Price phone.

My Grandmother holding me. I don't look very happy though. I love the stockings in the background. My mother made those. If you look really closely there is a snowman ornament on the tree. I actually still have that ornament and put it up every year.

I love this picture! I am on the left, my brother Philip is in the middle, and my sister Sarah is on the right.

Christmas 1981. My sister and I opening presents in our footie pajamas.

Sarah and I all dressed up. Don't you just love the knee socks and brown shoes? We are sitting on our BIG stone fireplace.

So there you go! Perhaps I will have to play around with the scanner again some day!

Adelle's Little Miss Muffet

Adelle has really taken to coloring and drawing recently. A few weeks ago I came home to see this cute picture. Adelle says it is a picture of Little Miss Muffett "Miss Muffet is screaming from the spider. She is running away. I made it as a Nursery Rhyme.". Those are her words exactly!

Knight of Multiplication

So a week ago Lydia was honored to become a Knight of Multiplication! She told me she is really close to passing off division as well. Way to go Lydia! Keep up the great work. Now if only she had told us when they were going to "knight" her. Then we could have been present as well. In Lydia's defense she didn't know in advance either. Well, we are super proud of her.

Girly Hair

Last Sunday I tried to do something "girly" with Adelle's hair. It can be difficult because her hair is so short and because she is a bit sensitive. She can be pretty dramatic at times. Anyway, this is how she looked when we were all done.

I know it isn't anything spectacular, but at least she wasn't going to church with fly away, staticy hair again.

Oh what do you do in the winter time..

when all the world is gray? Well funds have been tight so we have found our own ways to have fun this month. Can't go to Disneyland? Why not bring the park to your own living room. The girls and I played one of our favorite board games. The Magic Kingdom. We put on the Disneyland Soundtrack and imagined we were there.
Need a new friend? Adelle decided to use her own money to buy this pink poodle. It was one we had to stuff with her bear factory.

Want to get Dad out of his rut? Give him Legos! Wes and the family had a blast making our own little world with Legos. We were all cracking up when Wes made Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. They battled right in our living room complete with dramatic dialogue!

I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard!

Adelle made little animals for her Lego camping trip.

Lydia girl working on the dreaded homework! I guess everything can't be fun :)
